Monmouth, Illinois

Monmouth, Illinois (Map) Located in the heart of Warren County, Monmouth, Illinois is a beautiful, farming community rich in culture and history. With a population around 10,000 residents, this small town was once home to both famed gunfighter, Wyatt Earp, and former President of the United States, Ronald Reagan.

If you are looking to break away from city living, Monmouth is the right mix of small town community with access to big city amenities. Both the Quad Cities and Peoria are within a short driving distance and Galesburg's shopping district is less than a half an hour away.

The "Mighty" Mississippi River is less than half an hour to the west, providing many opportunities for boating, fishing, hiking, sightseeing, and more!

The "Maple City" also provides numerous recreational activities including some of the most beautiful parks in the state and the always entertaining annual Prime Beef Festival.



Students of Monmouth and the surrounding counties are primarily served by two school districts: Monmouth-Roseville Community Unit School District 238 and United Community Unit School District 304. Both districts combined serve over 2,500 students a year and provide access to ten schools, serving grades K-12. In addition, Monmouth is home to Immaculate Conception School, a private Catholic school serving children from Pre-K through eighth grade.

Monmouth is also the home of Monmouth College, a private liberal arts college that has been providing residents with higher education opportunities since it was founded in 1853. Monmouth College is best known as the home of the first national sorority in the United States, Pi Beta Phi.

Shopping & Recreation

As a farming community, Monmouth provides an array of small town shops and dining for all to enjoy. Dining options include pubs, steakhouses, pizzerias, foreign cuisine, and more. The city is also home to a variety of shops selling wares from pottery, antiques, and furniture to books, flowers, clothes, and groceries.

For the outdoor lovers, Monmouth provides one of the largest collections of green space and park land in the state including a municipal golf course and swimming pool. The city is host to the annual Prime Beef Festival, held during the Labor Day week. This festival is kicked off with one of the largest parades in western Illinois. There are also a number of local events including concerts, fairs, markets, and more.

If you are looking to get out of town for a bit, the Galesburg community is located just up the road on Route 34 and provides a range of recreational opportunities as well.

Arts & Culture

Monmouth supports a rich cultural heritage and history. Famous gunfighter, Wyatt Earp, was born here and former President, Ronald Reagan, lived in Monmouth for a short period of time. There are a number of historic sites around the community that are worth visiting. For more information, residents and visitors can visit the Warren County History Museum, operated by the Warren County Historical Society.

Whether you enjoy performances, history, or exhibitions, Monmouth provides it all. The local art community is mainly supported by the Buchanan Center for the Arts, but exhibits and galleries are also located on the campus of Monmouth College as well.

For the theatre lovers, the Wells Theater on the college campus provides an array of performances throughout the year. In addition, music buffs can enjoy concerts at local venues including the annual Maple Leaf Community Concert Series, a series of five concerts by musicians from around the United States and the globe, and the annual Deep Blue Innovators Blues Festival.


Whether Presbyterian, Catholic, Lutheran, Baptist, or otherwise, Monmouth provides a number of local churches and places to worship.
